According to the National Institutes of Health, trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a chronic pain
condition that affects the trigeminal nerve, which is responsible for sensation in the face. It may
develop without apparent cause or be the result of another disorder. Additionally, there can also
be continuous pain of moderate intensity in the same area affected by the trigeminal nerve.
TN causes episodes of sudden, extreme, shock-like, shooting, stabbing, and/or sharp pain,
typically in one side of the face. It can also include burning, throbbing, numbness, tingling, or
dull ache sensations between attacks. Although the pain caused from TN is not life-threatening, it
is very severe and can be both physically and mentally disabling.
Doctors have a few options when treating TN, but all forms of TN are often associated with an
ineffective response from treatment. Since the symptoms of TN are so disruptive to a person’s
quality of life, it is very important for medical researchers to continue to look for new ways to
treat TN.
This research study will evaluate an investigational drug to see if it can help reduce the
symptoms in people with TN facial pain. Participation in the study will last about 24 weeks.
Study participants who qualify to do so may enter an extension study of up to another 52 weeks.
Medical research is required before new medications can be approved for use, and medical
research would not be possible without volunteer study participants. This is why we hope you
will provide your contact information to learn more.
Minimum requirements to participate:
This is not a complete list of requirements for participation. If you provide us with your contact information, we will promptly reach out to provide you with more information about our research study.
Participants who satisfy applicable requirements may be compensated for their time and expenses. The amount of compensation available and the applicable requirements will be discussed by the staff at the research center.
If you are interested in participating or just wish to learn more, please provide your contact information. Our goal is to contact all people who submit a contact form within two business days after submission.
Doctors and scientists are constantly discovering new medications and devices that may help prevent, detect, diagnose, control, and treat illnesses. A research study or clinical trial is a scientific study that tests these new discoveries. Research studies depend upon the participation of volunteers.
There is no guarantee that participants will receive any benefit from participating in this study. However, this research study may yield new information that could benefit people in the future by helping to answer questions about the effectiveness and safety of the investigational drug.
Participation in a research study is completely voluntary. In all research studies, qualified potential participants are first informed about the research study in detail. After receiving this information, all participants must give their consent in writing to proceed. Some research studies involve more tests and doctor visits than the participant would normally have for an illness or condition.
Health Insurance is NOT required to participate.
You will not be charged for the investigational drug, study-related procedures and tests, or study
visits.
Before participating in a research study, volunteers must meet specific requirements. These requirements are based on various factors, such as age, medical history, current health status, current medications, and allergies. The circumstances that allow a person to participate are called Inclusion Criteria and those that prevent participation are called Exclusion Criteria. These requirements are used to ensure the accuracy of the study as well as the safety of all participants. We will not know whether you satisfy all study requirements until we speak with you and, if appropriate, complete a screening assessment at our facilities.
